New ABCs for the Social Impact Sector

The morning I wrote the original post, my husband (Michael) said I should "do the Alec" (aka: Alec Baldwin in the film version of GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS) and I said, "If only we had access to a chalkboard..." And then I was in a coffee shop that afternoon & I FOUND A CHALKBOARD! I MANIFESTED IT! ✨ (Thank you to the sweet barista who took this photo.)

A month ago, I wrote a post on why “Always Be Closing” (ABC) is DEAD 😵 (it’s icky, it’s transactional, it doesn’t work)


I shared MY two favorite new ABCs: ABC:  ”ALWAYS BE CANDID”  & ABC: “ALWAYS BE CURIOUS”

And asked my colleagues for THEIR thoughts on new ABCs…

  • ABC: “Always Be Contributing” ~ Sara Hoshooley
    “Whether sharing a resource, an idea, helping make a connection, providing information etc...always try to contribute something that will be of value to the person you're speaking with.”

  • ABC: ”Always Be Connecting! And Always Bring Coffee!” ~ Jessica Andersen

  • ABC:  "Always Be Connecting." ~ Ann Kolakowski, CAP®, CFRE
    “ When you engage the constituents in authentic ways, they naturally want to support what you are doing (because they've helped create it).”

  • ABC: “ Always Be Conversational” ~ Frank Byskov, CFA, CFP
    “Having a conversation with the other person, actively listening and making sure they feel heard makes for a greater relationship - maybe a donation, maybe not, but it will leave both with a positive experience, making a future donation more likely.”

  • ABCC: “Always Be Creating Content!” ~ John Gorman

  • ABC: “Always be charging” ~ Tim Lockie
    “Like my phone, iPad, batteries…”
