Let’s Face the Facts: The Nonprofit Sector Doesn’t Like to Pay People.
📸: Me & my husband, Michael Grew (grant writer & strategist, actor, and empathy educator). Oh, and Ella Buckaloo, too--she loved that we were all together for 90 minutes in the middle of the workday.
Midday Monday, I had a movie date with my husband. 🍿 From our couch, we watched Dan Pallotta's UNCHARITABLE documentary.
I’ve been fundraising for almost 20 years & this film affirmed everything I’ve witnessed:
❎ Scarcity Mindset
❎ Playing Small
❎ Over-Working for Under-Compensation
❎ Focusing on the “Tree” instead of the “Forest”
This film reminded me that I’m not alone in seeking new, innovative paths forward.
Others share my dream of a world in which we:
Shift the cultural mindset toward feeling good about people making money by helping others
Educate our boards & community members on the needs of our organizations, so they support the necessary overhead
Pay top talent what their expertise & vision are worth, so they can make unique, invaluable contributions
Measure success by dollars raised (not percentage of budget spent on overhead)
Explore how building community & crafting events can create fundraising magic
Give innovative employees the space to dream/experiment on how we can exponentially grow non-profits to a scale that actually SOLVES the problems we’re tackling
To quote the film: “Let’s not confuse morality with frugality.”
I encourage EVERYONE who cares about nonprofits & social impact to watch this documentary (& encourage your board members, colleagues, & community members to do so, too).
🔥 Is anyone else as fired up as I am? 🔥
🎙️: Who else has watched this doc? Read Dan’s book or watched his TED talk? We’d all love to hear your thoughts!
